The Allure of the Criminal Mind

True crime content offers a window into the complexities of human behavior. It satisfies our curiosity about the motives behind heinous acts and the psychology of those who commit them. Moreover, it provides a sense of thrill and suspense, allowing us to experience danger from the safety of our homes.

We can tell ourselves the truth, we are more likely to turn our heads when an animal is killed on screen than when a human is killed.

Who Commits the Crimes?

According to the 2023 UNODC Global Study on Homicide, men represent both the majority of homicide victims (81%) and perpetrators worldwide (90%).

However, when it comes to intimate partner violence, women are disproportionately affected. A UN report highlighted that an estimated 140 women and girls are killed daily by their partners or family members globally, with 60% of these deaths occurring at home.

Who's Watching and Listening?

True crime content has a massive following. In the U.S., 84% of the population aged 13 and older consume true crime media through various platforms.  Podcasts, in particular, have seen significant engagement.

Around the world:

  • U.S. Women are almost twice as likely as men to regularly listen to true crime podcasts (44% vs. 23%).

  • UK Man 58% and Woman 42%

  • Similar in Australia, just 2% more Woman

  • Poland 50%-50%

  • Portugal 73% Man

  • China and Japan 57% Man

This demographic is not only consuming content but also engaging with it:

  • True crime podcast listeners are 4.4 times more likely to provide a tip or other information to help solve a case

  • They are also more likely to donate money directly to victims and their loved ones.

  • Fans often remind us of forgotten unresolved cases.

The Impact on Victims' Families

While true crime content can raise awareness and even aid in solving cases, it can also have unintended consequences. Victims' families often experience re-traumatization as their loved ones' tragedies are depicted and sensationalized for entertainment purposes.

Our fascination with true crime is unlikely to wane anytime soon. However, it's essential to approach this content with sensitivity and awareness. Remember that behind every story is a real person and a grieving family.

Staying Safe

So, as you delve into your next true crime binge, stay curious, stay safe, and always respect the real lives behind the stories.
